Waterway: Oblong Lake

Oblong Lake is a small lake nestled at the eastern tip of Haliburton Lake, with the community of Fort Irwin in the middle. Oblong is a deep, relatively undeveloped lake with few cottages and properties. When the water is high, navigation between the two lakes is great, but when water levels drop there is a chance that you could not get into Haliburton Lake. Popular with anglers, Oblong Lake offers plenty of weed and rock structure along the shoreline – perfect for bass! There is also still a natural population of lake trout. The average depth of Oblong Lake is 32.8 ft (9.8 m) and the maximum depth is 90 ft (27 m).

Directions:
Northeast of Haliburton, take the Highway #118 to the Haliburton Lake Road (County Road #14).  This road leads past Eagle Lake and Oblong Road before eventually crossing the south end of Haliburton Lake en route to the village of Fort Irwin.  The main launching site is found at the road crossing over the channel linking Haliburton Lake and Oblong Lake.

Fishing:
Haliburton Lake is a deep clear lake that provides ideal habitat for lake trout. The big lake offer much better fishing for smallmouth bass that average .5-1kg (1-2lbs).  Oblong Lake also has the same populations of smallmouth bass and lake trout as the larger Haliburton Lake.
